Our Beginnings (by Bernard Wotton, and by looking over old church bulletins)
| A few years before 1988, a group of people attempted to form a local MCC church in this Chattanooga TN area. It only lasted a short time. (If anyone knows about this time period, please let me know at BernardW69@aol.com. I had met one person by the name of John who knew of that event and even attended a few times. But by the time I met John, the group was no longer meeting, and I never thought to get details about that beginning, since I had not even known about the present MCC in Chattanooga TN.) |
1988
| Sometime towards the end of 1988, maybe
around Sept or Oct. a group of people from the state of Louisiana
came up to Chattanooga and wanted to start a local MCC
church. They got in contact with the Knoxville MCC
church in Knoxville TN. Under the direction of
Rev. Bob Galloway, pastor of the Knoxville MCC,
what was to become the local MCC church of Chattanooga became a parish
extension of the
Knoxville MCC.
Around six months later I found out that there was a MCC church in Chattanooga. At an AIDS Memorial Service held at the Grace Episcopal Church that I attended, Rev. Galloway prayed during that service, and he was introduced as the pastor of the local MCC church. I stayed after that service to meet him and to find out where they were meeting. They met Sunday nights at the Unitarian Universalist Church. I started attending the local MCC services the next Sunday. Then a few weeks later I attended their membership classes, and joined MCC of Chattanooga (MCCC). Rev. Galloway could not attend and preach at every service. Other people spoke and various student clergy from various MCC churches in the greater Tennessee-Georgia-Alabama areas ministered to us. |
1989 - 1990
| Some time during this time period, Ms. Felicia Fontaine, a MCC student clergy, became our part-time Minister/ Pastor. She was from one of the Atlanta MCC churches, and drove up to Chattanooga most every weekend. |
